When fishing for bonefish you need a variety of patterns to imitate what the bonefish are feeding on. Some flats have an abundance of crabs, while others maybe have few crabs but many shrimps. Many times I have seen bonefish turn away from my fly because it wasn't what they were feeding on, only to swap flies and get an instant take. Having a variety of weight in your flies is equally important. If fishing shallow water you need a light fly. The last thing you want is for your fly to snag the bottom just as the big bonefish is about to suck it in! Likewise if fishing deeper water you need a heavier fly to get down quickly to the fish. You should also attempt to match the colour of the bottom with your fly, i.e. fishing over pale sandy bottoms requires a light fly; fishing darker areas requires a darker pattern. The following flies are proven catchers of bonefish...
Possibly the most effective bonefish fly there is. It is my go-to fly for bonefish of all sizes. Light tan for fishing over sandy flats. Tied on the Timeco 811's. Size 4.

The Gotcha is perhaps the most popular bonefish fly ever designed and has accounted for thousands of bonefish for anglers worldwide. This simple and very effective pattern belongs in the box of every bonefish angler, and tying the Gotcha in a variety of sizes and weights will help anglers match local fishing conditions. Sizes 4 & 6
The Crazy Charlie series is an essential pattern for targeting Bonefish and Permit on the flats. Tied on the Tiemco 811's to give you the utmost confidence in this very popular tool of the trade. Size 4.

Using the razor sharp and brutally strong Tiemco 811s, this Brown Shrimp Pattern will be be sure to do the trick when the situation demands it. This is one of my top patterns in Cuba if a light fly is called for in very shallow water. Highly recommended. Sizes 4 & 6.
A Fulling Mill favourite, largely owing to the brilliant name which has seen it repeatedly make it into the best sellers since it's introduction in 2011. The pattern itself has proven to be highly effective. An essential pattern for targeting flats species such as bonefish and permit but also great with bread and butter species such as flathead, bream and snapper. Size 4.
Essential pattern for targeting Bonefish on the flats. To make life easier it is offered in both weighted and unweighted versions, so you can fish them both shallow and deep. Tied on the Tiemco 811s, they won't let you down. Size 4.

A further take on the series of 'Charlie's' this Tab version is another useful fly to have on board as you head out in search of large bones. As ever, we've sourced a great and highly reputable hook to pair with this killer pattern, in this case it's our old, trusted friend, the Tiemco 811s. Size 4.
The Critter Bug is one of those simple flies that can reliably imitate several prey species whether it is shrimp or baitfish. The leggy body brings the fly to life with the slightest of movement and the red eppoxy eyes make it stand out amongst the crowd, particularly in dirty water. Ideal for fishing on very long leaders, a loop knot is best for maximum versatility. Size 4.
A great pattern from top Alphonse Island guide, James Christmas. The ideal pattern to use when targeting bonefish, permit or the hard biting trigger fish. Tied on the super strong Gamakatsu SL12. Size 2.
As the name suggests, this fly is famous for landing a Grand Slam in Salt Water terms, that means you can use it to target Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit. Tied on the Tiemco 811's, one of the best hooks available for saltwater flyfishing. Each hook features precision-ground, chemically sharpened points and low profile barbs. Straight eye, standard length, extra-strong, forged. Size 4.
A crab pattern that can be employed to catch permit as well as bonefish, triggerfish, bluefin trevally and even bumphead parrotfish. Crabs are almost impossible to imitate with any real degree of subtlety, but this fly uses a left-field approach. Throw it into the salty water and the fly is almost perfectly camouflaged, as the seabed shows right through it. Permit and other tough cookies like big, spooky bonefish and bluefin trevally, fall regularly for this fly because they lose sight of it and then, when they do see it, they fear that it will disappear again and rush into eating it. Believe me, it is deadly. Offered in a variety of sizes and shades, all tied on the unbeatable Tiemco 811's, which is more than capable of landing any of the above, although, if it is the Triggers you are after, take spares as they will munch through just about anything given enough time. Size 2.

A selection of Fulling Mill flies to imitate saltwater baitfish when chasing tarpon, barracuda, snook, etc. I always like to have another rod in the boat or carried by the guide, set up with a baitfish imitation, ready to cast at whatever predator comes within casting range. There's nothing more exciting than casting close to mangroves anticipating a snook or barracuda launching itself at your fly! Or covering a barracuda patrolling the flats looking for its next meal!
Super strong very sharp hooks, and extra durable flies ready for anything. This tarpon fly has an elongated tapered head design that provides little wind resistance on long casts while at the same time the contrasting coloured tailing materials seem to make this fly come alive in the water. Fulling Mill only uses the highest quality hooks when it comes to tying flies. This fly is tied on the Owner Aki, one of the best hooks available. Size 2/0.
Tarpon are known for being picky but they seem to love these bold rabbit fur patterns which kick off irresistible movement the moment they hit the water. Tarpon are also known for their ability to bend, break and slip hooks and that’s why we've taken no chances and linked these patterns up with the mighty and highly respected Owner Aki hooks. Honestly, if you're lucky enough to hook into a big tarpon, don't let it be on some second rate hook! Size 4/0.
Andy Mill gave us some of his top Tarpon patterns for fishing over large Tarpon in super clear waters. After all, Andy knows a thing or two about this species so we took his advice to heart! Andy's flies are dressed on his hook of choice the Gamakatsu SL12. Size 1/0.
Tied on the Tiemco 811s, this is an effective general purpose Baitfish pattern that many saltwater predators find hard to resist. From Bones abroad, to Bass at home, its well worth having a few of these in the armoury. Size 2.
Tied on the Gamakatsu SL12 this Black and Purple Brushy is extremely popular with Saltwater flyfishers. The brushy design gives a great bait-fish profile, ideal for targeting any fish feeders in the salt, such as GT's, Tarpon and Cuddas. Size 6/0.
Popping through the surface, you'll appreciate the excitement of seeing hungry fish chase and engulf these baitfish imitations. Tied on the Mustad S/W range, they're tough too. Size 1.
