Bolton Abbey - 5 miles of double bank brown trout fishing
and grayling fishing in spectacular surroundings controlled by the Chatsworth Estate. Bolton Abbey is the best known stretch of the Wharfe due to the great fishing and accessibility. Due to the number of tourists visiting here it is not really suitable for weekends, bank holidays and school holidays, although you can always find a quiet bit if you know where to go!
Day Tickets available:- from the Estate Office, Bolton Abbey (sign
posted from the centre of the village and opposite the Post Office) From 1st April to 21st December.
Cost:- £32.50 trout season, £22.50 grayling day ticket, reductions applied for Juniors.

Burnsall - 7 miles of fly fishing upstream of Bolton Abbey water. Run by Appletreewick, Barden and Burnsall Angling Club. This famous stretch is similar in character to Bolton Abbey and it can also be badly affected by tourists, but again they can be avoided. Try walking further from the car park than the average day-tripper likes to, which usually doesn't amount to very far at all! Again spectacular scenery but only open to visitors at certain times of the year.
Day tickets issued:- by The Red Lion, Burnsall (you can't miss it), but they are not available March, April, May and October, and June and September weekends. A map is issued with your permit.
Cost:- £35 (£15 1st November to 31st January)

Upper Beats
Kilnsey - Kilnsey Angling Club, the second oldest club in the country, controls the River Wharfe at Kilnsey. They have a fine stretch of the Wharfe, with day ticket available, but allocated
beats are relatively small. The river does tend to be overstocked with large trout, especially the lower beats, but wilder, more natural fishing, is available in the upper beats. Thigh or waist waders only is the rule, rolled down chest waders don't count either, so go equipped.
Day tickets issued:- from the Tennant Arms in Kilnsey between 9.30am and 10am to be allocated your beat.
Cost:- £35 a day.

Buckden and Hubberholme - A lovely stretch of river on the Upper Wharfe not far from its source. The fishing is controlled by Bradford City Angling Association, who withdrew day tickets for this venue for the 2016 season due to administrative reasons, but also because the cost of joining the club is so reasonable that it is not prohibitive (£40). As with all rivers in their upper reaches, the River Wharfe at Buckden and Hubberholme fishes better after rain when it is falling; if the river downstream is in flood and unfishable (falling not rising) then head up here for some fine sport. This area used to hold some fine specimen trout but over recent years the bigger fish seem to be fewer in number.
Day tickets:- no longer available - see description above. Follow website links below for membership details.

Ilkley - Where the better fly fishing really starts on the River Wharfe (heading upstream). The river flows through the outskirts of this lovely little town, so fishing is never in solitude as it can be higher up the Wharfe valley. It can be very busy with tourists at weekends and holidays. Good fishing for brown trout and grayling. Closed from 27th February to 7th April inclusive.
Day tickets available:- from Ilkley Tourist Information Centre (Tel: 01943 602319) and Ilkley Riverside Hotel (Tel: 01943 607338) in Ilkley. You need to produce your rod licence to be issued with a day ticket and this rule is strictly enforced.
Cost:- £11 Adults and £5.50 Junior (under 16).

Addingham - The Addingham Angling Association controls 3 miles of good fly fishing for brown trout and grayling on the Wharfe throughout the year. The top of this stretch meets the bottom of Bolton Abbey water and a map is issued with your day ticket. The club close the river to day ticket anglers for a week after re-stocking, so it is advisable to telephone before you set off.
Day tickets:- from the Post Office, Main Street, Addingham.

Pool-in-Wharfedale (nr. Otley) - Not exactly in the Yorkshire Dales and can be over-fished by coarse fisherman, but does have some excellent grayling fishing. About 3 miles of fishing upstream and downstream of road bridge controlled by Leeds & District ASA. I have had most success upstream of the road bridge.
Day tickets:- from the petrol station adjacent to the road bridge where the A658 and the A659 meet.
Cost:- £4

Bainbridge - is situated in Upper Wensleydale on the River Ure. It has good fly fishing for brown trout and grayling run by Wensleydale Angling Association, but as this is near the headwaters of the Ure it is best fished after rainfall. The scenery here as good as it gets; with broad open meadows, stone barns dotted around the fields and rugged hills stretching as far as the eye can see. A map is issued with your permit which also includes fishing on the smallest river in England, the River Bain. What more could you ask for?

Hawes - is the next village upstream from Bainbridge in Upper Wensleydale and also has good fly fishing on the River Ure and its tributaries. These tributaries, although very difficult to fish, do have good trout fishing with some large fish present. The fishing is controlled by Hawes and High Abbotside Angling Association who have 15 miles of trout and grayling fishing (unfortunately they do stock the main river with farm reared trout for some reason). Grayling tend to be found from Appersett downstream and reach very good sizes.
Day Tickets:- can be obtained from the Three Peaks shop or Waltons of Hawes both in the village of Hawes.
Cost:- £16 per day, £35 a week or £60 season.

Aysgarth - Bradford City AA have some good water on this part of the River Ure with 2 particularly good stretches at Worton Bridge and Aysgarth. There are no day tickets, but a yearbook is only £40 plus £15 joining fee (concessions for OAP's and juniors). Worth considering if you will be fishing for more than a day and they also have some other good fly fishing on the rivers, Wharfe, Ribble and Aire.

Nidderdale Angling Club - have trout fishing and grayling fishing on around 7 miles of the River Nidd. For more information I would advise you to look at the Nidderdale Angling Club website. They allow various methods of fishing, which is a shame as they do have some excellent fly fishing water.

No EA gauge for the River Skirfare but the River Wharfe at Kettlewell should be a good indicator.
Arncliffe - is where you need to head for day tickets to fish the River
Skirfare; the Falcon Inn to be precise. From Arncliffe you can fish on 4
miles of the River Skirfare. It is advisable to telephone the Falcon Inn before
making the journey to Arncliffe as the landlord can be difficult to locate

There Is Currently No EA Measuring Station For The Level Of The River Doe Or Twiss
Ingleton - is the centre of the fishing on both the Rivers Doe and Twiss. Tickets can be purchased from the newsagent in the village. A map is issued with your ticket when available. There are various access points to the fishing on
both rivers. Amazingly Ordnance Survey Maps and Google Maps have the two rivers mixed up and labelled incorrectly. The Doe is further northwest than the Twiss and the club map backs this up.
Cost:- £10 day or £40 season

Kilnsey Park - located on the B6160 about 10 miles north of Skipton in the village of Kilnsey. Good fly fishing for rainbow trout in 2 small lakes. There are many other attractions here for the whole family, particularly children, including children's trout fishing, aquarium, adventure playground, and restaurant.

Fewston Reservoir and Swinsty Reservoir - are both very good rainbow trout fisheries with some wild brown trout present. Also know as Washburn Valley Reservoirs. They are run by Yorkshire Water and are located just off the A59 between Harrogate and Skipton, one above the other. Fewston and Swinsty provide a pleasurable day out fly fishing in superb surroundings. They are both about 150 acres in size. Bank fishing only. Tickets can be obtained in the fishery office, on the south end of Fewston dam wall. The office is sign posted from the A59 near Blubberhouses.

Leighton Reservoir - Situated in the hills and moors above Masham, in Wensleydale (sign posted from Masham). At 105 acres this is quite a large lake in an exposed position, but it has outstanding fly fishing for quality rainbow trout which run quite large. Bank fishing only.
Cost:- various ticket options - see their website or telephone in

Coniston Hall - can be found at Coniston Cold on the A65, a few miles north-west of Skipton. The lake is set in the magnificent grounds of a large house and makes for a peaceful day's flyfishing. Both boat and bank fly fishing are available, but I would advise on the first option to fully exploit the lakes full potential. This lake is very well stocked and lures are banned. Therefore fly fishing is best done with nymphs or dry flies which both work very well.
Cost:- £16 for 2 fish and a boat will cost you an extra £10 from the reception in Coniston Hall Hotel.

Stocks Reservoir - The worst thing about Stocks is that it is in fact in Lancashire! Only Joking. It is a superb large reservoir offering top quality fly fishing for top quality fish. Stocks reservoir has both boat and bank fly fishing. Stocks Reservoir can be found by turning off the B6478 at Slaidburn (signposted) between Clitheroe and Long Preston.

Malham Tarn - is run by the National Trust who offer boat only fly fishing for wild brown trout. Malham Tarn is a fertile lake but it is also very exposed to the elements and I would only consider fishing it in settled weather. Malham Tarn is located between
Settle-in-Ribblesdale and Wharfedale, near the village of Malham.
Cost:- A midweek day ticket costs £18 and the boat will cost you £15. At weekends and bank holidays the prices rise to £20 for the permit and £20 for the boat, from Malham Tarn Field Centre.

Scar House Reservoir - is another wild brown trout lake in an exposed position at the head of Nidderdale, but it does provide excellent fly fishing in the right conditions. A day here is a solitary affair and may not be to everyone's taste. The lake is controlled by Nidderdale Angling Club.
Cost:- £15 to fish both Scar House and the River Nidd further down the Nidderdale valley.
